10.6: Remove time/date stamp from screen shot filenames

I upgraded my system to Snow Leopard from Tiger, and noticed that Snow Leopard adds a date and time stamp to screen shots’ filenames. I really don’t care about this new feature, and wanted to remove it. After a bit of a search, I found the solution. Type (copy) into Terminal: sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemUIServer.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/Localizable.strings After you type your password, TextEdit will come up and it will open a text file (Localizable.strings) with root editing powers. Search for these lines: /*

It is often distracting for a software developer to have the Problem Reporter application pop up each time an application under development crashes. Also, in Snow Leopard, there is no longer an option to not submit the report to Apple, which raises security and privacy concerns. Here’s one way to disable Problem Reporter: simply run the...
Even if you buy a Mac in France, English and Japanese are the only languages available in Dictionary.app. MacOS X is the same no matter where it is sold and only comes with English and Japanese pre-installed at the present time. There is a translator Dashboard widget that comes with Leopard that can do French-English and vise versa, as well as...
In Leopard, for Quick Look to display the contents of a text file, its extension had to be ‘registered’ with its UTI in the Info.plist file of the application associated with the file extension (see this hint ). For most file endings associated with applications, this already works out of the box (in short, for all files with a Finder...
If you’ve installed an application from a .pkg -type installer, Mac OS X keeps a listing of what was installed in the Library/Receipts folder — either the top-level Library, or your user’s Library. The lsbom command can be used to see this list, and to uninstall the application. First, find the receipt. It will be in either ~/Library/Receipts...
This hint updates this older hint to work in Safari 4 in Leopard. Disclaimer: Proceed at your own risk…Cocoa, to me, just means a hot drink made from chocolate powder! This hint requires you have Apple’s Xcode installed. Also make sure Safari is not running when you do this. In the Finder, control-click on Safari and select Show Package...
I was very surprised to see that the following was not included among the various ways to convert a docx document to doc format in the July 2010 issue of MacWorld. [ crarko adds: They do mention using TextEdit to do the conversion there, but not textutil .] If you are using Leopard or Snow Leopard, open a Terminal window, navigate to the location...
OpenOffice will open WordPerfect files, regardless of their extension. SaveHollywood is not ready to work on Snow Leopard. Apparently this extends to any software that runs older screen savers in the background — they’ll appear with a system message reading “not compatible.” If I open System Preferences’ Screen Savers panel as usual, my system tells me that old screen savers are not...
