In Snow Leopard, when opening Freehand files, the app crashes. The fix is to use the Freehand Clip Art Viewer, which is located in the application’s own folder. If you browse the hard drive with this utility, then you will see thumbnails of your files — simply double-click on them to open. Adobe tech support were of no help at all, as they said Freehand has been upgraded to Illustrator CS4. Hope this helps other frustrated Freehand

Often I need to edit text files that don’t have any associated application. This usually occurs when I’m changing system configuration files. My original process was to Control-click on a file and then select Open with and then Other, and then search through the application folder for my text editor program. From another site, I learned...

To anybody that’s running Safari 5 on Leopard or earlier and still wants to use 1Password 2.x, you should be aware that recently upgraded browsers are no longer being supported in version 2 of 1Password. For those of you who can’t or won’t update to Snow Leopard or 1Password 3 or both, here’s how to enable 1Password 2.x...

Opening new Illustrator files in an older version
Even though the new Adobe CS5 graphics/design suite is out, a lot of us haven’t updated yet to the new version. But of course some clients are shipping their new logo in EPS or Illustrator format created with the new version. And if you still have only the older (CS4) version of Illustrator you can’t open them. Here is a workaround...

OpenOffice will open WordPerfect files, regardless of their extension. However, one cannot Quick Look Wordperfect files with other extensions, such as .frm , which is a name given to Wordperfect form files....

10.6: Run Privoxy 3.0.16 on Snow Leopard
I really like browsing without all the flashy ads around, so I’ve been using the filtering-proxy Privoxy now for many years. But there is no longer support for Mac OS X, as there isn’t a maintainer for the Mac OS X port any more. MacPorts still has 3.0.12, which has some major bugs (timeouts), so I decided to build from source. Here’s...

10.6: One possible fix for 3G ZTE modems in Snow Leopard
I support quite a few people who use USB 3G dongles; many have moved to Snow Leopard, where some have been having problems. None of these people are having problems with Vodaphone, as they support the Mac very well, and have up-to-date 64-bit drivers. We were having some troubles with ZTE 622 3G dongles on Snow Leopard, and here’s one possible...

Dynamically attach files to iCal events using tags
This hint shows how to utilize OpenMeta tagging to attach a set of multiple, often-changing files to an iCal event. Although it may work with other tag managers out here, I’m using TagoMan2 for this purpose, which allows me to refer to a tag using a tag:// URL scheme: Edit an event in iCal Enter tag://Name_of_tag into the URL field.
