Experiment with GIMP’s new single window mode

Are you curious, like me, about the new Single Window Mode (most excellent; see this article at Ars for more details) available in the newest unstable 2.7.x GIMP releases? Well, sadly, the final and stable GIMP 2.8 release won’t come out before the end of this year, and there are still no experimental 2.7.x binary releases available for Mac OS X (via X11). One could always try to compile everything from source, but that might be quite complicated and time-consuming. So, let’s look at another, definitely easier way of running GIMP 2.7.x on Mac OS X: not (semi) natively through X11, but through virtualization. First of all, we need a virtual machine with the latest Ubuntu 9.10

It’s a well know fact that running X11 applications on ae Mac crates a lot of ugliness. I discovered a way to solve this, at least partially. A lot of Unix applications use the Gimp Tool Kit, or GTK for short. You can install GTK on Mac via MacPorts by running sudo port install gtk2 in Terminal. There are some themes in MacPorts as well to...
Section: Communications , Cellphones , Cellular Providers , Smartphones , Mobile When Sprint stores and RadioShacks opened their doors on Friday, there were lines of people wanting to get their hands on a shiny new EVO 4G, the latest and greatest smartphone on Sprint and debatably on the market. Sometimes I want to run AppleScripts, bash scripts, etc. directly inside my Windows virtual machine at work. Even though I’m working in a Windows environment, there are so many useful things that can be done via AppleScripts or Terminal commands to control network, system and component settings, that it can be very useful to run them directly...
I was upgrading the hard drive in my MacBook Pro, so I started by making a Time Machine backup of my existing drive, which is running 10.6.2. After installing the new drive, I went to boot off my Snow Leopard disk. I couldn’t find it, so I booted my machine from the original restore DVD (10.5), and did a ‘Restore from Time Machine backup’...
It bugs me that Time Machine won’t backup my encrypted home folder, provided by File Vault, while I’m logged in. I rarely log out of my account, and that makes Time Machine pretty useless in my opinion. I wanted some way to create a backup while logged in. I’m more concerned about my laptop being stolen than my backup drive,...
Back in December I wrote about Cinch, a tiny little app that lets you drag application windows around to the edges of your screen, and have them instantly resize to something useful. Cinch is mouse-oriented, but has a keyboard-oriented cousin called Sizeup. Today, a comment on that old post alerted me to a free, open source

This hint is about installing Ubuntu Linux over the Internet on a PC compatible with network boot (PXE) without using a CD/DVD drive, a USB Flash drive, or having previously downloaded a full disc image. You will need another computer on the same LAN. I will be using a Mac, hence why you’re reading this hint here. Both computers obviously...
iPhoto stores the photo files in bundles. This makes it difficult and time-consuming to access your saved photos manually in Finder, and makes it impossible to open your iPhotos via an Open dialog. It’s also impossible to use Time Machine for individual iPhoto pictures (unless you choose File

After installing the OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 update, I found that I could no longer write to Samba (SMB) volumes shared from my Linux server (running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala) that I had mounted on OS X.
