The Mobile World Congress , a huge mobile-oriented conference convening in February in Barcelona, Spain, has been dominated by the iPhone over the last several years. However, there has never been a formal presence by Apple or many major players in the iPhone ecosphere at the event. That’s going to change in February of 2011 when the first Macworld Mobile will…  Read More →

The careful readers at Engadget have noticed that Apple cut a few corners (so to speak) on its website documentation for the latest iPod touch. There’s no ear speaker or phone service on the device, obviously, but nevertheless Apple’s iPod touch display units show that the Phone app is still sitting down there in the lower left corner. Searching in Spotlight, according to another screenshot, will bring up the text messaging app,...

Here’s an extension that’s quite at home with Cleaner YouTube . Naked Twitter relieves your Twitter account’s homepage of all the sidebar clutter. The only remaining links (profile, replies, direct messages and log out) are represented by small icons at the top of the page. Additionally, there are no pop-up hover tips or lists. Boy it looks nice. It’s certainly not for everyone. Like I said, the groups, lists, trending...

Along with the up-front iTunes 10 changes ( social awareness , monochrome sidebar, new-attitude icon ), it looks like Apple has quietly dropped one store-centric feature from the latest version. Roberto Baldwin at Mac|Life notes that the feature allowing users to buy a section of a track from the iTunes Store for use as a custom ringtone has gone AWOL between 9.2.1 and 10. Granted, there are lots and lots of …  Read More →

As you may have heard, Apple had some sort of event on Wednesday . In amongst the Big News like iPods and iOSs and iTunes and iTVs Apple TVs, Steve Jobs briefly mentioned AirPlay , a replacement for the AirTunes music streaming system used in the Airport Express multi-purpose device. I’ve built my home audio solutions around AirTunes, so this was, for me, the most interesting thing Apple announced. Details on how the system will actually...

The great Shazam app, which I’m still using after downloading it to my iPhone on day one, has released another update, bringing the whole suite of apps (including the paid Shazam Encore and the Shazam (RED) version) to version 3.3. This one updates the app for iOS 4.0 and includes Retina Display graphics and support for fast app switching. Version 3.3 also adds some setting customization options like “tag on startup,” improved...

Since people still seem to want to leave their houses and go to the movies (despite Apple’s best efforts to keep them firmly on their couches), the iTunes Movie Trailers site now features a sophisticated Showtimes view. This HTML5-savvy offering uses location awareness in your browser to show the movies playing nearest you, along with the upcoming screening schedule and links to the theater sites for ticket purchases. The site works great...

Steve Jobs was surprisingly candid with All Things Digital’s Kara Swisher yesterday — he reportedly told her that both Facebook and Apple had spoken about integrating more closely with the new iTunes social network Ping , but Facebook asked for “onerous terms that we could not agree to” regarding Facebook friends connecting on Ping. He didn’t elaborate, obviously, but you can see in Facebook’s public documentation...

Gamasutra cornered Epic Games’ Mike Capps (he of the very impressive Epic Citadel demo yesterday at the Apple special event), and Capps confirms that what you see running on your iPhone is the real deal — Unreal Engine 3, with all of the bells and whistles that it has on the major HD consoles. The actual game that Project Sword will become …  Read More →

Sometimes you roll along, having a pretty good day… and sometimes, you just want a giant worm to rise up out of the ground and destroy everything. Super Mega Worm is for that second type of day. (You’ll have to find something else for the first — Doodle Jump, perhaps?) It’s a game where you control a gigantic worm on a 2D field. You use a slider (or the accelerometer) to direct it through the soil and up onto the surface...

Booyah has released an iPhone and iPod touch version of its Facebook game , InCrowd, and it’s now available on the App Store . The app, like the very popular MyTown , uses location check-ins to create a game around social networking. But unlike MyTown, this app was originally released as a Facebook game . Booyah originally started InCrowd as its first Facebook venture, but it’s now bringing …  Read More →

ALK Technologies today is releasing a new version of the CoPilot Live app with a feature called ActiveTraffic. It uses real time traffic flow information that mates with dynamic routing technology to get you to your destination by selecting alternate routes, then accurately estimating your new arrival time. The traffic information comes from INRIX , which is a leading provider of traffic data. I tried the new app, and it certainly showed some...

Matt Fisher, whose videos have been featured on TUAW before , has produced a new video chock-full of great Mac OS X Dropbox tips. In this 10-minute clip, Matt shows: How to copy the Mac clipboard to a Dropbox text file by creating an Automator service A demo of AirDropper , an excellent way of securely requesting files from others and having them delivered...
